I had learned through a conversation that there is a zoo in the Netherlands dedicated entirely to monkeys. A quick bit of research revealed that it was Apenheul in Apeldoorn. So, just like that, another destination was added to the zoo list.
After a short walk from the parking lot, I entered the park. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on my side—it rained on and off throughout the day. This had a noticeable effect on the monkeys in their spacious enclosures, some of which even allow direct interaction with the animals. Many of them had retreated into their shelters and were gazing gloomily outside. I really couldn’t blame them.
Nevertheless, I was still able to see nearly all the monkey species, which was at times truly impressive, sometimes very amusing, and often quite fascinating. I imagine that on a sunny day, Apenheul would be much more crowded (it was relatively empty, which made observing the animals much easier), but the monkeys would likely be far more active as well, offering a completely different experience. All in all, I can definitely see myself visiting again in better weather.
