A few years ago, I had already visited the zoo at Emmen once. Back then, it was still located in the city center and quite cramped, which made me feel genuinely sorry for many of the animal species due to their often very small enclosures. At that time, however, the new zoo was already under construction, and now that it had relocated, I wanted to see what had been created here.
In the meantime, it had been renamed Wildlands and was situated not far from the old zoo grounds, on the edge of the city center. There were significantly fewer animal species and much larger enclosures that aimed to create as natural an environment as possible. I found this very positive. The overall design was also much friendlier and more inviting than in the old zoo. Especially for children, there were more opportunities for play and adventure. Attractions like a train ride through the African enclosure even allowed visitors to get quite close to the animals at times.
Overall, the new zoo was a truly pleasant surprise. The only downside is that the admission prices remain very high, even compared to other Dutch zoos, so it's worth keeping an eye out for special offers.
