For work, I had to spend two weeks at Gothenburg. Since I had the weekend off, there was plenty of time to explore the city. My first destination was the large Slottsskogen Park. Situated right in the heart of the city, this park not only offers varied vegetation and wonderful views over Gothenburg, but also a variety of animals that can be observed in a small zoo-like area.
The animals range from everyday species such as chickens and goats to more exotic inhabitants like penguins. Directly opposite the park lies the Botanical Garden. Unfortunately, it had started raining, but this gave the gardens a unique atmosphere while wandering through them. Plants from all over the world, arranged in beautifully designed beds according to their geographic regions, could be admired throughout the grounds.
The next day, following a colleague's recommendation, I took a ferry to the island of Vrångö. This small island boasts an impressive variety of wildlife and, thanks to its modest size, can easily be circumnavigated by foot within a few hours. The vegetation changed constantly, ranging from forests and dense blueberry thickets to meadow-like coastal landscapes close to the sea. For nature lovers, the island is certainly well worth a visit.
