Originally, GEL were supposed to be the first opening act for Volbeat, but even before the tour began, they had disbanded due to internal disputes. So a quick replacement was needed—and that came in the form of Witch Fever from Manchester.
The four women took to the rather dimly lit stage promptly at 7:00 PM and launched into their forceful set, delivering a sound that’s hard to categorize—a mix of punk, industrial, doom, and gothic. Vocalist Amy Walpole shifted between gentle singing and powerful shouts, accompanied by guitarist Alisha Yarwood and bassist Alex Thompson, who laid down the sonic foundation. Slightly in the background, Anabelle Joyce worked the drums. Amy was the only one who attempted to interact with the audience, but it felt rather sluggish.
Let’s keep it brief. I don’t think I was the only one unsure of what to make of this band. They’ve been around since 2016 and had just released their second album “Fevereaten“ a few days earlier, but musically I found it all rather thin. The songs were very similar to each other, the hooks often consisted of repeated single lines, and vocally, in my opinion, it wasn’t quite there yet. So I wasn’t the only one relieved when the British group cleared the stage after about 30 minutes.
