Wacken Open Air XXIV

Wacken (Germany)

(Pentax K-5 with Sigma AF 70-200mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)

The first day on Wacken always starts somehow more relaxed than the others. On the one hand the large stages on the main area are not yet in use on the other hand the arrival traffic is still ongoing. Nevertheless some already gathered in the afternoon in front of the Wackinger stage to listen to the sound of the band Fejd.
The Swedish band around the two front men Patrik and Niklas Rimmerfors is getting along without e-guitars. Instead medieval intruments like bagpipe, wheel fiddle or nyckelharpa are used. For the necessary metal hardness additionally people like Lennart Specht on keyboards, Thomas Antonsson on bass and Esko Salow on drums were taking care of. Although the songs are on Swedish a lot of people in front of the stage were singing along loudly so that there was a quite good atmosphere. With them the guys did not only bring songs of their latest longplayer "Nagelfar" which namegiving song was the opener of their gig. Also the former albums "Storm" and "Eifur" were numerously present. At really good weather (thank god not such a mudslinging as last year) the band is also very keen on playing which leads to the audience not only singing along but also the crowd shaking the legs.
Overall a solid gig getting you slowly into the Wacken mood. Because across the next days one or the other highlight shall be following.
