20.05.2025 Static Dress
Graspop Metal Meeting
Dessel (Belgium)
(Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II)
The second day began at noon on the smaller Jupiler Stage with Static Dress from the UK, who are still essentially newcomers. The group around vocalist Olli Appleyard consists of guitarist Vincent Weight, bassist George Holding, and drummer Sam Ogden.
Their musical style is a bit hard to pin down: a bit of emo, a bit of nu‑metal, a bit of metalcore, a bit of punk, but overall the mix is incredibly captivating and interesting. Appleyard delivered a truly striking performance, throwing his whole body into every song. It didn’t take long before the crowd in front of the stage became just as lively as the band itself. The first circle pits formed as the music grew heavier. The sun was already beating down mercilessly, but that didn’t stop the band from ramping up the intensity even further. They essentially have only one album so far, 2022’s Rouge Carpet Disaster, supplemented by a handful of singles. These made up most of the set that day.
It was genuinely impressive how powerfully the sound hit you. I hadn’t known them beforehand and had only watched a few short clips of them on YouTube. But that doesn’t come close to what these guys deliver live on stage. It will be interesting to see which direction Static Dress will take in the future. In my eyes, they’ve definitely laid a solid foundation.
