Metal Female Voices Fest IX

Oktoberhallen Wieze (Belgium)

(Pentax k-x with Tamron SP AF 17-50mm 2.8 XR Di II LD Asp IF and Sigma AF 50-150mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)

As last but two act of the evening Draconian could play the slot of Midnattsol and it should become something very special. The spheric solemn doom metal sounds of Anders Jacobsson and Lisa Johansson do have something very own but fascinating.
In summer their new album called "Dark Oceans We Cry" was released. Out of that you could here quite a lot like e.g. directly the opener "The Drowning Age". It was wonderful listening to the slow growls of Anders whilst Lisa during the refrains deeply touched you with her wonderful voice. Also the audience, meanwhile gotten larger, could really feel this. Although their music invites to headbang (even though rather in an old men style tempo) the atmosphere was more attentive rather then lively. The interaction between band and crowd was unfortunately reduced to the absolutely minimum but nobody did care. Although the setlist seemed to be very short the Swedish had a 55 minutes slot. The time passed by like nothing and soon it was the time for the last song "Elysian Night".
Normally I would say that who is able to should watch them live but only short time after the gig on Metal Female Voices Fest IX Lisa Johansson announced that she wanted to spend more time looking after her family and besides her actual job she would not have enough time and energy to potter at Draconian adequate. So this gig was the last one of Draconian in the known cast. How they will continue the band has not yet announced but I wish Lisa all the best for her further way of life and look back with a tear in one eye to a really impressive voice that from now on will not be heared on stage anymore (Was the name of the album inspired by this decision?).

Setlist:

  • The Drowning Age
  • The Last Hour Of Ancient Sunlight
  • Heaven Laid In Tears
  • Deadlight
  • Seasons Apart
  • Bloodflower
  • Elysian Night
