After a very good opening with Neaera I went over to the True Metal Stage, where the crowd was somehow manageable. The Norwegians Tristania were expected and had mainly songs from their acclaimed current album "Darkest White" with them.
The distinctive thing of Tristania is the alternation between the clear voice of front women Mariangela Demurtas and here male opposite Kjetil Nordhus who is not only growling but besides that also has a very good singing voice. Several times also guitarist Anders Hoyvik Hidle is allowed to show that he also is able to grunt. The sound has to be improved several times in the beginning by the technicans but afterwards it quite OK what is roaring out of the speakers. Besides great songs like "Number" or "Darkest White" of the current album there are with "Beyond A Veil" or "The Wretched" also some of the time of Vibeke Stene. Last ones did not really work.
But don't worry about that. Overall the guys and gals are quite convincing although I have to say that their show at Metal Female Voices Fest some years ago was more appealing to me. But that could be due to the early starting time. Be that as it may I think that their is still room for improvement in playing live to better convey the all in all great albums.
