Young and Old Generations
The second day was heavily dominated by metalcore. Things kicked off at noon with newcomers Static Dress, who managed to impress under the blazing sun on the Jupiler Stage. Afterwards, the atmosphere continued inside the tent with As Everything Unfolds, before the Spanish band Bloodhunter delivered the first thrash‑tinged sounds of the day. Employed To Serve then shifted things back toward core territory, before the Brits from Green Lung slowed the pace. Their slightly psychedelic stoner metal made for a very relaxed afternoon—at least until The Ghost Inside brought the festival back to metalcore, though their set didn’t quite grab me as much.
Polaris, the Australian representatives of the genre, did a much better job. Even though they didn’t reinvent the wheel, they created far more energy in front of the nearly overflowing Jupiler Stage. As evening approached, my highlights of the day followed. First up was Jinjer, a band I had wanted to see live for a long time, and they didn’t disappoint in the slightest. The same goes for the veterans of Opeth, despite the difficult circumstances caused by Slipknot’s simultaneous performance. The glorious finale came from Behemoth, whose intense and impressive show underlined that they have truly grown into a worthy festival headliner, even if their musical style is certainly not made for the masses.
